The Building Contractors Association (BCA) of Northeast Indiana held their annual Excellence in Construction Awards ceremony on Thursday, April 25.
The Hagerman Group is proud to have been awarded the 2024 Excellence in Construction Award in the $1M-$5M category for our work at Pontiac Street Market!
The Pontiac Street Market project took an existing building, constructed circa 1927, located in a food desert on the southeast side of Fort Wayne and turned it into a full-service grocery store. The market was built through a partnership between the City of Fort Wayne and Parkview Health. It sells fresh produce, dairy items, bread, canned and packaged items, frozen foods, take-and-bake meals, and sandwiches. It also carries toiletries and other necessities. Another component of the grocery store is the integration of a sub shop called Sub Connection. This sub shop prepares cold and toasted subs with quality meats and cheeses, fresh produce, and fresh bread. Soups and salads are also available for purchase. The incorporation of the Sub Connection into the grocery store gives the neighborhood another option for nutritious, made-to-order food.
The official opening of the market in November 2023 also brought 29 jobs to the community; 20 positions were filled at that time. Plans are being developed to add on-site educational initiatives, including classes on making health food choices.
Pontiac Street Market has already had an impact on the community. Its neighbors can now visit a grocery store within walking distance of their homes, something none of them ever thought possible. Thank you to the BCA for acknowledging the successes of this unique project!
